Tell them when you feel sure
WAY advises going carefully, and telling children and in-laws only when you're sure you're ready. Their reactions can be hard to hear. Others who have been through it can be a real help.

Reassure them nobody is being replaced
Cruse suggests telling children that a new partner isn't replacing the person they lost. They can keep remembering them, and so can you. Explain that a new relationship doesn't change how you felt about the person who died.

Talk to each child on their own
Relate suggests talking to each child individually and planning the conversation so it isn't a surprise. Make sure they feel heard, as well as explaining how you feel. Grown-up children may worry about losing their place in your life.

Questions
My grown-up children are upset. What can I do?
Give them time. Listen to what's worrying them, and let them know they still matter to you as much as ever. Feelings often soften as they get to know the person.
Should I tell my late partner's family?
That's your choice, and timing matters. Many widowed people wait until a relationship feels settled. Peer groups such as WAY and Way Up have members who have been through it.
When should I introduce someone new?
There's no fixed point. AARP suggests you don't need to introduce every date. Wait until the relationship feels right to you.
